On Monday morning, Evan Sandberg had a pair of WSOP online bracelets in his trophy cabinet. By the end of the day, he had a World Series of Poker Circuit ring to dust around as well.
After collecting his $133,841 for first place in the Event #13: $1,700 Main Event at the WSOP Circuit Lake Tahoe festival, Sandberg now has a little over $1.4 million in live cashes.
The $1,700 buy-in, no limit hold'em Main Event attracted 439 players and racked up $665,085 in the prize pool. This made up more than a third of the $1,764,246 in prizes awarded across the 18 ring events of the festival.
Fighting For First
Sandberg's battle to the top spot didn't come easily. Having spent two days fighting through a field that was 439-entries strong, Sandberg found himself at a final table with Michael Pearson.
Pearson is a solid player with form at Lake Tahoe, having taken down this exact event in 2016 and 2019.
Sandberg also had to watch out for WSOP Circuit ring winners Bilguun Odgerel and Brett Murray and Dann Turner who has a WSOP Online bracelet, five WSOP Circuit final table finishes, four WPT Deepstack final tables, and a TV bubble finish in the 2023 WPT Rolling Thunder Main Event.
Despite the strong line up, Sandberg did his best to avoid being intimidated at the final table.
“For me, I always enjoy a challenge," he told WSOP.com. "So, playing with tough competition does make it a lot funner for me. It motivates me to really play my best.”
With all this hardware at the table, Sandberg managed to hold his own, going into Day 3 with the fifth biggest stack of seven.
Day 3 Action
On the final day, Vinny Chu and Travis Stevenson were the first out of the action on Day 3. Pearson followed in fifth, earning $28,921.
Murray and Turner took fourth and third respectively, leaving Sandberg heads up against James Czarnecki.
Czarnecki had a good start in the heads up phase of the tounrey. Although the players began with roughly even stacks, Czarnecki quickly pulled ahead.
However, Sandberg was able to turn things around when his three-bet bluff with Qx6xwas called preflop.
“I thought he looked weak when he raised — a completely bad read," he explained after the hand.
However, it was a perfectly timed mistake since the flop came out queen high and he picked up a six on the turn. After check-raising all in and getting a call, Sandberg's two-pair took it down and suddenly he was out in the lead.
After that, it was just a matter of mopping up the last of Czarnecki's chips. Czarnecki ended up taking home $87,977 for second place, while Sandberg pocketed $133,841 and the ring for first place.

- In order to succeed at Rummy, players need to understand more than just the fundamentals. The idea of going out, which happens when a player successfully melds every card in their hand to leave none in their hand, is one crucial component. In addition to concluding the round, this action establishes the round's score. When another player leaves the game, players also need to know how many points are awarded to the unmelded cards they are holding. 24-12-24
- For example, it might be a good idea to play more aggressively to force your opponent into a position where they must go out if you see that they still have a number of high-point cards in their hand after you have already formed multiple melds. Also, knowing point values can help you decide which cards to keep and which to discard as you play. It could be wiser to focus on making more melds as soon as possible rather than holding onto high-point cards that are still unmelded in your hand as a round draws to a close. You can improve your chances of minimizing losses and optimizing opportunities for victory by efficiently tracking points and modifying your strategy as necessary. 24-12-24
- Players can complete sets and runs with more flexibility thanks to these adaptable cards, which can represent any card in the deck. By completing gaps in your hand that would be challenging to fill with regular cards alone, jokers can greatly increase your chances of going out quickly when used properly. Jokers must be used sparingly, though, as keeping them around for too long can result in missed opportunities if other players leave before you can make good use of them. Also, take into account the number of jokers used in each round; if several players are using jokers at the same time, it could get harder to create original melds without heavily depending on these wild cards. 24-12-24

- Mastering Rummy: An All-Inclusive Guide For generations, players have been enthralled with the traditional card game Rummy. It is a favorite among both casual & competitive players due to its unique combination of skill, strategy, & a dash of luck. It is imperative for anyone who wants to get better at Rummy to comprehend the basics. Essentially, Rummy is a matching card game in which players form runs and sets using a standard deck of cards. 24-12-24
- Throughout the Rummy game, paying close attention to your opponents can yield insightful information that helps you adjust your strategy. Players can learn about the hands & possible melds of their opponents by keeping an eye on the cards they draw and discard. When an opponent routinely selects particular suits or ranks from the discard pile, for instance, it could be a sign that they want to form particular sets or runs. With this information, you can modify your own play appropriately, maybe by not discarding cards that would enable them to finish their melds. Also, observing the habits and behaviors of opponents can also highlight trends that could be used against you in the game. 24-12-24
- One card is discarded from each player's hand after they alternately draw from the draw or discard pile. The secret to winning is creating melds, which are sets of three or more cards of the same rank or runs, which are collections of cards in the same suit in sequential order. It is essential to comprehend these fundamental concepts in order to create strategies that work as you advance in your rummy career. 24-12-24

- By combining all of your cards into legitimate combinations first, you can reduce the number of points remaining in your hand when another player goes out. It is a flexible option for game nights because it can be played with two or more players and has variations that add new rules & tactics. The fundamental rules of rummy are not too complicated. Depending on the variation being played, each player is dealt a certain number of cards, usually seven or ten. With the top card face-up to begin the discard pile, the remaining cards form a draw pile. 24-12-24
- This tactic enables you to stay adaptable and change your strategy when new cards are revealed. Also, think about the ranks and suits of your cards; as the game goes on, having a combination of high and low cards can give you more melding options. By closely examining your starting hand and modifying your approach appropriately, you can set yourself up for future rounds of success. Rummy gameplay revolves around forming melds and sets, and mastering this technique can significantly increase your winnings. Three or more cards that are in the same suit in sequential order or all of the same rank make up a meld. 24-12-24
- For instance, a set might consist of three kings from various suits, whereas a run might consist of 4-5-6 of hearts. Players should continuously assess their cards and search for chances to form combinations as they draw new cards. Being able to identify possible melds in your hand is crucial. Also, creating melds requires careful consideration of which cards to keep and which to discard; it's not just about finishing sets or runs. By holding onto cards that have the potential to form multiple melds, players should try to keep their hands flexible. During gameplay, this flexibility enables players to react to shifting conditions with efficiency. 24-12-24
