When PokerStars introduced Power Path in mid-2023, it gave players a low-stakes way to qualify for big poker events. For most, it was a fun extra. For Matt Harniman, it became the backbone of his career.
The 36-year-old from London has spent the past two years grinding his way to the top of the Power Path leaderboard.
He’s earned more passes than anyone: 2 Gold, 30 Silver, and 60 Bronze. That's more than $100,000!
Those numbers don’t just make him the most successful Power Path player to date and they tell the story of someone who turned a side feature into a serious grind.
Harniman started small, playing thousands of $1 Step 1 shootouts. He worked his way up, building his game and refining his approach along the way.
Now, Power Path is part of his daily routine. He plays multiple qualifiers a day, sometimes even on his phone while walking.
“I started with a $500 deposit and played the $1 16-player shootouts probably 6,000 times,” Harniman told the PokerStars Blog. Over time, he developed a routine that saw him regularly stockpile Step 4 tickets, treating the ladder not as a novelty, but as his day job.

What sets Harniman apart isn’t just volume. It’s how he uses his passes. While others chase live events, Harniman plays the long game. He converts most of his Silver and Gold passes into online tournament bundles, allowing him to play bigger events without risking large chunks of his bankroll.
“Cash comes in waves,” he said. “A lot of my success just comes from showing up every day.”
He also looks for edges where others might not. For example, when he knows he’s about to win a satellite seat, he’ll register for the event using a ticket so he can take the seat prize in tournament dollars instead. It’s small decisions like these that help him stay in action and stay profitable.
Harniman still loves live poker. He used a Silver Pass to attend the 2025 Irish Open, a stop he’d always wanted to play. He’s planning to travel more for live events when the bankroll allows. But he’s not rushing. He plays with his own money and wants to grow things sustainably.
Beyond poker, he’s also planning for the future. Harniman hopes to one day become a financial advisor, a path that lines up well with the planning and structure he’s built around his grind.
