On Saturday, Venetian Poker Live streamed the final table of the Venetian DeepStack Championship $1,600 UltimateStack.

It was a big final table with $164,108 up top and a seven-player roster of Patrick Leonard, Ran Ilani, Qing Liu, Derek Gregory, Michael Cervantes, Mitchell Halverson, and Andrew Ostapchenko, hot off his recent bracelet win.

When the stream started, Ostapchenko had the chip lead with a stack of 9,025,000.

As play began, the game was no limit hold'em, the blinds were 75,000/150,000 with a big blind ante of 150,000, and the seating arrangements were as follows:

With the wide spread of the stack sizes, the bigger stacks weren't incentivised to play aggressive poker at the start of the stream.

So, it was unsurprising that Halverson, with his small stack, was the one to get in there, gamble, and hit the rail first, earning $27,346 for seventh place.

Just a couple of hands after Halverson's exit, Ilani followed him to the rail, handing his stack to Leonard with the bad end of an A10v. AQmatch-up and putting Leonard in second place for chip count.

Then, while Donnie Peters and Tristan Wade discussed their shared man-crush on Leonard in the commentary booth, the landscape at the final table continued to change rapidly.

Leonard and Ostapchenko tangled in a series of cautious but mechanically intricate spots and Liu doubled Cervantes up before Leonard sent him to the rail, earning Cervantes $47,015 for fifth place.

Knocking Cervantes out put Leonard in the chip lead. Liu, on the other hand, was the new short stack and had to fight it out to scrounge up a few blinds here and there.

Gregory v. Leonard

Leonard and Gregory got into it over the rules after Leonard asked Liu to count his stack out. Gregory jumped in to point out Liu didn't have to answer.

The very next hand Leonard asked Gregory to move his hand to make it easier to count Gregory's stack. In the following exchange, Gregory asked, "Are you blind?"

After losing the first three players in the first 45 minutes of play, it wasn't until the two-hour mark that Liu finally got it in against Gregory and lost. Liu won $62,957 for fourth place.

By that point in the tournament, stacks had evened out with Gregory (10,950,000), Ostapchenko (9,050,000), and Leonard (9,500,000) all holding very similar stacks.

Ostapchenko found his stack slowly eroding, eventually jamming with just over 2 million in his stack and 108in the pocket. Leonard called with A10and held, going into heads up play against Gregory with a 2-to-1 chip lead.

Heads Up Rivals

All in heads up.
Gregory and Leonard all in heads up.

The heads up match took almost an hour to resolve as the chips moved back and forth between Gregory and Leonard.

Eventually, Gregory won an all in to take the lead, putting pressure on Leonard and running up a 3-to-1 lead.

Despite his chip lead, Gregory continued to grouch, snapping at the dealer when she almost added his blind to the previous pot as Leonard raked it in.

Another couple of big pots gave the chip lead back to Leonard then cemented it, leaving him with 22,000,000 in chips to Gregory's 7,500,000.

In the final hand, with blinds at 300,000/600,000, Leonard min-bet pocket queens from the button and got a call from Gregory with K7.

The board missed them both completely, leaving Leonard's queens standing to take the pot, the trophy, and the $164,108 first-place prize.

Gregory won $117,624 for second place.
